Summary
Multiple biological and psychosocial risk factors interact to influence drug misuse that can occur when controlled drugs and substances are prescribed. Nurses must be aware of these risks and use preventative interventions targeting both identified risks and protective factors to ensure prescribed psychoactive substances are used safely. In addition, nurses must monitor pharmacogenomics and behavioural research to continue to develop their expertise in this area.
