Module 3: Assessment

Introduction

This module provides learners with the opportunity to examine safety considerations in the assessment of conditions which have often been treated with a CDS. These include the following: Chronic and acute pain, insomnia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and status epilepticus. Their epidemiology and comprehensive assessment including risk related to the prescription of control drugs and substances are discussed.

Learning outcomes

Module 3 addresses the following learning outcomes:

  1. Define and describe the epidemiology of chronic and acute pain, insomnia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and status epilepticus.
  2. As part of a comprehensive history and physical assessment of the above conditions, use standard and validated tools that focus on symptom assessment, psychosocial history, psychiatric status and substance use history.
  3. Describe safety considerations related to CDS, including risk assessment.
  4. Prepare and document goals of care.
