Module 2: Basic Pharmacology of Controlled Drugs and Substances
Lesson 3
Summary
Methadone, buprenorphine/naloxone, and cannabinoids, are controlled substances that are used for addiction management, chronic pain management, and as supportive agents for cancer patients or those diagnosed with HIV. Some of these agents, such as methadone, require additional education and authorization to prescribe; others are not within NP prescriptive scope in all jurisdictions (e.g., cannabinoids versus medical marijuana). Z-drugs, gabapentinoids, and tramadol are other substances that are either controlled or monitored and require special consideration.
