Module 2: Basic Pharmacology of Controlled Drugs and Substances

Lesson 1

Psychostimulants / amphetamines

Stimulants, and most commonly amphetamines or methylphenidates, have been the mainstay of pharmacotherapy for patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (Edmunds & Mayhew, 2014). A variety of formulations are available in Canada including short- and long-acting methylphenidate, short- and long-acting dextroamphetamine, and a combination product containing dextroamphetamine mixed with amphetamine salts (Adderall).
