Opioids

The terms opiate and opioid are often used interchangeably. Opiates, however, refer to the chemical compound that is naturally occurring in poppy plants. In contrast, opioid refers to the synthetic or semi-synthetic forms of this molecule and has become the more commonly used term for all agents in this class.
