Module 2: Basic Pharmacology of Controlled Drugs and Substances

Lesson 1

Summary

Controlled drugs and substances are a central part of the treatment of patients with many types of diagnoses. Their therapeutic effects allow many patients to achieve desired outcomes such as improved pain control, seizure management, and improved mood or sleep.  The psychotropic characteristics of these medications, however, create risks for misuse and diversion. Providers at all levels need to have knowledge of the pharmacology of controlled drugs and substances to better support patient care.
