Epidemiology of status epilepticus
Status epilepticus is considered a relatively common neurological emergency, with annual incidence rates estimated at 10-41 per 100,000 population (Betjemann & Lowenstein, 2015).
Epilepsy affected 128,581 individuals in Canada (2010-2011 data), and was the third most reported neurological condition after the effects of stroke and brain injury.
Mortality in adults associated with status epilepticus remains at around 20%, which has not changed over time (Betjemann & Lowenstein, 2015).
