Methadone – Special exemptions for prescribing
According to the Narcotic Control Regulations, providers must apply to Health Canada for an exemption under Section 56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act before prescribing methadone for opioid addiction management or pain management, with separate exemptions being required for these two different indications. Providers should the process for obtaining a Section 56 exemption should contact their provincial / territorial regulatory body as education and application requirements may differ across jurisdictions.
