Module 1: Professional Accountability and Prescribing
Lesson 5
Introduction
RNs and NPs are accountable for using the best evidence in their efforts to provide safe, compassionate, competent and ethical care (CNA, Code of Ethics, 2008). Given the proliferation of research findings in health care, nurses must impartially assess all resources to determine their quality. This lesson will provide a practical approach to assess evidence related to controlled drugs and substances use. Types of research and credible sources are reviewed, but the emphasis is placed on Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) that are generally the primary resource in clinical practice. A practical approach to critical appraisal of CPGs will be applied using a case study in primary care.
