Module 1: Professional Accountability and Prescribing
Lesson 2
Provincial and territorial regulatory resources for controlled drugs and substances
RNs have a long history of managing care for patients requiring controlled drugs and substances and receive the knowledge and skills to safely and competently provide this care through their education programs. In preparation for changes in NP prescriptive authority related to control drugs and substances, jurisdictional regulators introduced additional education for NPs, recognizing that this may not have been included in sufficient detail in all NP education programs. This education for practicing NPs and new graduates is a bridging measure until the controlled drugs and substances content is integrated into NP education programs. The specific courses required and whether or not they are mandatory differ across jurisdictions.
These differences will be highlighted for information purposes. Learners, however, should check with specific regulators for changes in the current requirements
