Module 1: Professional Accountability and Prescribing
Lesson 1
The New Classes of Practitioners Regulations
Under the CDSA, only physicians, veterinarians and dentists could conduct activities with controlled drugs and substances, such as possession, administration, prescription, sale and transportation.
The New Classes of Practitioners Regulations (NCPR) was passed in November 2012 and added NPs, midwives, and podiatrists to the list of authorized prescribers under the CDSA. These new regulations enable NPs to prescribe, administer and provide controlled drugs and substances (with some exceptions) that are listed in Schedule 1 of the Benzodiazepines and Other Targeted Substances Regulations, the schedule to Part G of the Food and Drug Regulations and Schedule 1 to the Narcotic Control Regulations.
