Module 1: Professional Accountability and Prescribing
Lesson 1
The New Classes of Practitioners Regulations (cont’d)
Even though federal legislation authorizes NPs to prescribe controlled drugs and substances, provincial/territorial legislation and regulations must be in place to extend this prescriptive authority to NPs. At the time of preparing this module, all Canadian jurisdictions except Ontario have enacted legislation and regulations authorizing NPs within their jurisdictions to prescribe controlled drugs and substances. Therefore, it is critical that NPs are aware of the New Classes of Practitioners Regulations, legislative and regulatory requirements within their own provincial/territorial jurisdiction prior to prescribing these medications.
