Several classes of medications are defined as controlled drugs and substances including opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, amphetamines and stimulants, anabolic steroids, methadone and cannabinoids. Module 2 examines the pharmacological principles and characteristics of these medications.

Module 3 provides learners with the opportunity to examine safety considerations in the assessment of conditions which have often been treated with a CDS. These include: Chronic and acute pain, insomnia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and status epilepticus.

There is considerable controversy about the efficacy of opioids and sedatives in the treatment of pain, anxiety and insomnia in non-life-threating and chronic non-cancer conditions. It is important to consider alternatives to CDS. Module 4 examines when and how to prescribe CDS safely and appropriately.

Monitoring and Evaluation

It is essential that patients receiving CDS medication therapy have appropriate monitoring and evaluation of the beneficial effects of the therapy, any adverse effects and progress at reaching the goals set out in a treatment plan. Module 5 examines effective patient monitoring and evaluation. .
