Data on the cost of non-medical use of prescription opioids in Canada is not available. However, in the United States it is estimated that the annual cost of the non-medical use of prescription opioids is more than $50 billion, with 94% of this cost due to lost productivity and crime (Expert Working Group on Narcotic Addiction, 2012).
