Opioids – Contraindications/precautions
Extra care must be taken in using opioids with special populations such as children, pregnant women and the elderly because of the potential for altered physiological effects.
Patients with a previous history of substance-use disorders also require special consideration. It is prudent to consult with a prescriber experienced in pain management and addiction management when dealing with such patients (Jensen & Rieger, 2014; NOUGG, 2017).
