Introduction

Several classes of medications are defined as controlled drugs and substances including opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, amphetamines and stimulants, anabolic steroids, methadone and cannabinoids. In order to safely and effectively prescribe and care for patients who use these agents as part of their healthcare management, providers must have a sound knowledge of the pharmacological principles and characteristics of these medications.
