The patient and clinician must determine the goals of care and decide if the benefits of treatment will attain the goals. Following that, the probability of success needs to be assessed. In the case of SM, the goals or treatment options were not mutually agreed upon. This will have compromised the probability of success have influenced actions. Lack of confidence in probability of success may be the reason full treatment was not offered as the clinician assumed that success would be unlikely because of the alcohol dependency.
