Module 1: Professional Accountability and Prescribing

Lesson 5

The evolving journey from evidence-based practice to evidence-informed practice

For several decades, health care practitioners have been expected to use research or “evidence” to assist in making decisions in their practice. Initially, this was referred to as “evidence-based practice” but the concept has evolved to “evidence-informed practice” to integrate experience, context, expertise, patient perspectives with current, relevant, and scientifically sound research (DiCenso, Ciliska, & Guyatt, 2005).
