Summary

Nurses are accountable to provide evidence-informed services. Evidence-informed practice integrates expertise, the patient’s perspectives, and the most current, relevant and scientifically sound research available. However, doing this can be challenging given the plethora of research and the complexity of controlled drugs and substance use in society. CPGs have been developed to support practice but are not without limitations. Using a practical critical appraisal tool to assess the quality of CPGs will help NPs to provide safe, compassionate, competent and ethical care.
