Summary

Prescription monitoring programs in Canada have taken on many different forms and functions but share the goal of enhancing public safety by decreasing misuse and diversion of prescribed controlled drugs and substances. Some programs are optional while others are required for all providers who prescribe controlled drugs and substances as part of their practice. NPs have a professional accountability to familiarize themselves with the requirements in the jurisdiction where they practice.
