Module 1: Professional Accountability and Prescribing

Lesson 3

Introduction

Prescription monitoring programs (PMPs) track the prescribing and dispensing of controlled drugs and substances with the goal of enhancing patient and public safety and reducing the risks associated with misuse and diversion. These programs exist in many Canadian provinces and territories in different forms, with a growing body of evidence supporting their value for both prescribers and patients. Evidence supporting PMPs will be explored, followed by a review of the different programs currently in place in jurisdictions across Canada.
