Lesson 1

The Narcotic Control Regulations

The Narcotic Control Regulations (NCR) (2012) outline the requirements for pharmacists, practitioners, hospitals and businesses when dealing with narcotics.  The term “narcotic” comes from the Greek “to make numb” and has previously been used to refer to substances such as opioids, cocaine, cannabis and other agents that can alter mood or level of consciousness and have addictive or dependency-forming properties.  In recent years, the term has become more commonly associated with the non-medicinal and illegal or recreational use of agents including cocaine, marijuana, etc.
